Holy ****. Dunno if it's my extreme tiredness or if this is actually funny but at several moments I just burst out laughing. At first I felt kinda ill but wow. I am amazed. what a champ.

Doggieees! Last play of General's NRL career: smashes a flying Michael Robertson into touch in the dying seconds to save a potential match winner. If Souths lose good luck seeing Matai playing any finals matches.

Re: So who works at Dick Smith? (AKA Interview Advice) (2 weeks ago)
Ok just typed this then saw that Alex covered pretty much all of it much nicer but **** it here you go.
I had an interview at Dick Smith just on 4 months ago. Basically the manager/assistant went through a few pages of interview standard questions. What are your strengths/weaknesses? Have you ever had conflict with another staff member/how did you handle it? Have there been any situations where you've spotted a problem or weakness within your previous company and helped to fix it? Why do you want to work/enjoy working in retail, have you ever had problem customers and how did you deal with them etc. General safety/retail questions. Very much push "the total solution" for the customer. I didn't but after working there for a bit I think they would have hired me the moment I said it if I had.
Then they asked where I thought I ranked from low/med/high in regards to knowledge on each category of products then asked a few simple questions about the categories to make sure I wasn't talking **** (so be honest). The difference between plasma/LCD, what components would you recommend to someone looking to get into PC gaming and a couple of others which escape me. If you weren't born in the '20s you should be fine.
Just always sound keen. If you're not quite sure about something - for example I was asked a question about some componentry (P&Rs) which I had no idea about, I just said I wasn't quite sure but if it is required I'd be more than eager to learn.
They also love flexibility. To be able to work whenever, wherever. I basically told them I could do whatever and that's probably one of the main reasons they hired me. I've worked at a all of the local stores since I started, doing half days here, half days there, if you're happy to do it they'll just keep giving you hours if you want them.
If you get the job it is a great place to work. Very laid back and (from my store's standpoint anyway) very focused on customer service which makes the time seem to fly. Decent pay and some commission after you come off probation (3 months).
Anyway best of luck with the interview, try to impress but try not to sound over confident with yourself.

Re: Your newest purchase (3 weeks ago)
@Light487 - That's a 22", the comparison is slightly skewed due to the 24" having a small height advantage with the stand that it's on. I think it evens out though with the angle of the photo as sitting here it is quite a bit higher than it looks in the photo.
Re: Your newest purchase (3 weeks ago)
Yeahh new setup.
Samsung BX2450 24" 1080P LED LCD Monitor - $395 at JB HiFi. $479 on the shelf but a guy on WP posted a scan of a receipt at that price and the guy matched it straight away. Cheaper than anything on Staticice (with postage factored in).
Have previously sworn by BenQ and was going to go with the V2400 but the notion of not having to wait for postage pushed it over. Sweet monitor.
My Dimension 4600 is a beast.

Re: Black Ops MP Gameplay (4 weeks ago)
One of my favourite things of MW2 is being killed by non-stop random **** falling from the sky! Glad they've reintroduced that part of the game.
I've turned into a big casual gamer of late and CoD is pretty much all I play with mates, we've all gone back to playing CoD4 which is just soooo much more fun in every single way. So if this is anything like MW2 (which it looks to be) I can't see us playing it for very long, might end up playing WaW instead, even if the **** bullet rego does make me cry.

Re: What are you watching? (TV Discussion) (1 month ago)
Just finished watching all of Always Sunny in Philadelphia again. Every time I watch it it seems to become an obsession for a few days, finish all 5 seasons then go and spend hours watching everything related to it on Youtube. Happens every couple of months. Awesome awesome thing is the new season starts next month, probably get another rerun in before then. Got a bit of a snippet though from a promo vid.
Re: Your newest purchase (1 month ago)
HTC Desire - Free on $49 Cap with Telstra. $400 a month calls/sms + 500mb data. Have been waiting for Optus to hurry up and get the Samsung Galaxy S in stock again but 2 weeks later they're still waiting so I figured I'd go with Telstra once I found out about their upgraded data allowance.
Also ordered a full body Desire Zagg InvisibleShield for $28 off Ebay. Have had one protecting my 1st gen iPod Touch perfectly for 2 years, awesome stuff.
..and a 16GB microSD card for $52 from ShoppingSquare.com.au for the phone.
Last night picked up a signed copy of Imago and a tour tee for $70 all up at The Butterfly Effect gig.
Decent weekend of spending so far.

For some reason the AEC decides to rezone my electorate, so instead of voting for a person running things from an office 5 minutes away from my house, I'm voting for some dicks I've never head of who live 450km away from us and probably won't see the place once in the next 4 years. All the while the old electorate is still there. Good move, AEC. Not that I really care but it just makes so little sense I don't really think these people have any idea.
Re: What made you smile today? (1 month ago)
Getting capped for the first time in a few months only to have it not as monitor-smashing-frustrating as usual thanks to my provider upping the capped speed to 256kb/s compared to the old 64kb/s. Still not as good as others but it's progress! especially when I can only get 1500kb/s to begin with.
Re: The Joys of Retail (1 month ago)
On the point of people ringing up asking what's wrong with their laptop... I made the rookie mistake of not telling every single customer that Toshiba notebooks take basically half a day to set up. Had so many people come back claiming their laptops were faulty and even one kid (who returned his laptop thinking it was stuffed), bypassed the setup and stuck a bios pass on it. Me not realising reformat it while he's still there, pack it up, sell it as a returned item, only to have the next customer ring up complaining that there is a password blocking them out. Apologised profusely, had to ring up the previous customer and get the password off them which took a bit of convincing as it was a personal password. Had to get the new customer to come back in to take it off, then wait through the entire setup process in store. Well I've since made sure everyone understands the Toshiba setup process.
Re: The Joys of Retail (1 month ago)
I do like it when we accidentally leave old tickets on the shelves and the price on the ticket is more than the actual price, a customer decides they like the look of the product, ask me what the best price is and when I go check, it's gone disco and is already $200 lower than the ticket states. Or say I can do it for however much more extra than the system price and chuck in a "free" warranty. Easiest sales in the world.
One bad thing about my job is when other companies quote your store's phone number as their technical support number... Telstra somehow managed to do this on their website and we'd get several calls a day looking for tech help on their phones or lines, with people demanding we help them as it is our number on the interwebs. Even worse is when Telstra phone techs tell a customer to take a Telstra issued modem/router into our store, or even any other problem they might have so we can try and figure out the problem even though we have absolutely **** nothing to do with it.
Actually the whole misconception that the store is some sort of free tech support service for anyone to come in and take up hours of the day with products the store has never stocked. Usually I'll just oblige as it makes the day go quicker but really when it's busy and someone brings in a product bought through a competitor and expects us to have a look at and fix it, with no intention of paying for anything at all, when it's still under warranty at the original retailer and they haven't made any contact with them at all... it really just baffles me.

1 x ticket to Dead Letter Circus - $28
What a brilliant time to turn 18, Butterfly Effect and DLC within a few weeks of each other, in Townsville, might end up buying tickets to the Cairns or Mackay shows as well and make a roadtrip of it.
Also picked up Forza 3 for $19 from the DSE tent at the V8s on Sunday. Watching the Forza comps all weekend made me do it, and I really don't need it as I've hardly made an indent into Forza 2 yet.

Nice surprise when I got to the entertainment centre. Carpark was packed, thinking what the hell I see the billboard and a Dora the Explorer show is on today, starting in 15mins.. fffffuuu- had to battle through a tide of screaming kids to get the ticket but well worth it.

Double post but oh well. Workplace politics.
My awesome manager is getting the flick because some fat cats decided that one lady running an entire store, putting countless unpaid hours into re-merchandising the entire store, doing every bit of paperwork and upholding our store's customer standards with no other management and basically working with only two staff members for weeks (casuals, who have been there less than 2 months themselves, doing 50+ hours a week), isn't good enough. Funny that we receive countless complaints about the store the fat cats run (at least four a day), who have plenty of staff and an entire fully-trained management team. She was basically thrown into the management role as well as when the last one left they were too cheap to hire someone else and actually train them and just put her up a rung.
Sad too because almost half of our customers specifically ask for her when they come in because she's so great with them.
Work is going to be **** **** now.

Re: Your newest purchase (2 months ago)
$179.95 - Hooligan. Bit of an impulse purchase
Also picked up a pair of jeans, first pair since I was about 10. More of a pants man.
Re: One Questions (2 months ago)
Have no idea about that site but you can get those for a tad under $40 at the moment at mymemory.co.uk. That's this weekend with 20% everything. Free delivery worldwide and I've used them a couple of times and they've been great.

Re: Your newest purchase (2 months ago)
What Alex said. A manager from another store came in and had a look at our clearance prices, decided they weren't good enough to get rid of everything before June 30 and straight marked it down to $100. Minus staff discount = $90.
Though I think the default clearance price is $190, head down and ask for a deal if any local stores have any left, the model is no longer on the website though so probably best to give them a call. Also meant to come with a bag and battery pack but we couldn't find any.
No lay-bys on clearance items Taco.
Some crazy prices on other things as well.

Garmin Nuvi 255 Wide Navigator - $50. Love EoFY clearances. Really didn't need it as I know my away around fairly well, but at that price why not.
Re: Gaming Bargains V2 (2 months ago)
Not sure if it's nationwide (I'll find out tomorrow but chances are it isn't) but DSE at Domain Central in Townsville have most Guitar Hero bundles at $50. World Tour bundles (with drums/mic) on all consoles (I think 360 was sold out), Metallica, Aerosmith. GH3 (not GH5 though). Yep no problem to the two people from Townsville.
